Biofouling is a headache for RO operation. Chlorine is normally employed to mitigate it. However, current membrane technology tolerance to its exposure is low and new technologies might be still a bit far from being a reality in the desalination industry. “Chlorine tolerant membranes could be the holy grail of RO,” Hoon Hyung, Head of LG Water Solutions business unit at LG Chem, weighs in.
